Sharing Your Culture With the World

Image
In addition to studying and exploring new places, all exchange programs also give you the opportunity to make your culture known. I am from Paraguay, a country located in the heart of South America and every time I travel for a program abroad, I try to share interesting details about my country. Here are some tips on how you can best represent your country in an exchange program. • Know the history of your country:  We must all know in depth the history of our country, important dates, representative people, current situation and other things that represent the country in some way. Before your trip, take the time to learn a little more about your country. There will be people who will ask you many things about it and you will want to have the correct answers. • Share what you like most about your country:  There is always something we love in our country; this can be its landscapes, architecture, gastronomy, music, etc. In my case, I really love Paraguayan music, th...

How I Use My Accent to Teach About Guyana

Image
One of the interesting experiences I can say that myself- as well as my other international friends have had- is having the conversations about where we’re from whenever people hear our accent. I constantly have to say where I’m from because I have an accent.  As you all know, I’m from Georgetown Guyana, the 592, the Land of Many Waters; however, a typical conversation usually goes like this: Them: “Hey! Where are you from? I noticed you have an accent, are you from Trinidad?” Me: “Hey! No, I’m from Guyana” Them: “Oh, Ghana? I didn’t know you’re from Africa.” Me: “Oh no, Guyana. G-U-Y-A-N-A, in South America and well you know the Caribbean.” Them: “Oh I didn’t know that, so you’re foreign.” Me: “I know, I know.” It’s at that point the conversation leads off into why I’m in the US and me being an international student. However, I find it’s always an interesting conversation to have when people mistake me for either African or Trinidadian. On some...

Aanchal: Summer Plans for International Students

Image
As the spring semester adjourns, students like me plan to formulate a schedule for the 10 -week long summer break. Some want to travel back to their country, some travel around to different parts of the country while others prioritize summer classes and utilize their vacation time studying and finishing up their coursework. The vacation time should be utilized to take a break and refresh yourself. It is indeed a well-earned break from course curriculum when international students get time to explore their options and research the availability of courses in that time and further. This transitional time between the academic semesters should be carefully catered to and put to use according to an individual’s interest. Here are some fruitful benefits associated with taking up classes in the summer: Great Opportunity to Boost Your Falling Grades- It could be possibly challenging for international students to deal with the abroad study pattern, and they may have fallen short of th...
